Thieving

10 targets across 3 areas. Pickpocket NPCs for coins straight into your purse, plus whatever is in their pockets — and take a hit to the face when you are caught.

How a steal works

Every attempt is one roll against the target's perception:

base chance = (100 + your stealth) / (100 + target perception) capped at 75%
success chance = base chance + 15% x (target mastery / 99) capped at 90%
your stealth = Thieving level + stealth from gear + Shadowstep Tonic
  • On success you get the coins, roll one item from the common pool, and roll each unique drop separately.
  • On failure you are caught: no loot, no XP, and you take damage. Being knocked out stops the steal, so bring food — Auto Eat covers this if you own it.
  • You start a new target at about 60%. Levelling past it, stealth gear and the Shadowstep Tonic raise the base chance up to 75%.
  • Mastery is per target and adds up to 15% on top of the base, so only a mastered target reaches 90%.

The Vault Keeper is deliberately different. Its mastery counts as stealth instead (one roll, capped at 90%), and its perception is far higher than 99, so even at Thieving 99 you fail it often until mastery and stealth gear catch up.

Town

A bustling town with many opportunities. Unlocks at Thieving 1.

What to steal for

Thieving is the game's most reliable early gold, and it is the only repeatable source of brewing-herb seeds — the Farmer covers the low tiers and Golo the high ones, which is what makes Farming and Brewing possible at all. Two of its rare drops gate real content: Golo's Farming Secret Golo's Farming Secret unlocks the Auto Farmer, and the Vault Keeper's unique is the best off-hand a thief can wear.

Exact gp/hour per target, including gear and mastery: Money Making.

One item per slot — a skill loadout holds exactly one of each, and only one item is tagged for thieving in any slot, so this is the complete set.
