Every attempt succeeds 80% of the time, at any level; the other 20% take the time and pay no XP. XP/s here already counts that: XP × 80% ÷ time, before gear, upgrades, events and speed bonuses. Gear with a success bonus closes the gap, and a +20% bonus makes every attempt succeed.
A failed attempt still uses its logs. With Keith's Steady Hands (total level 750, 2,000 gems) you keep them and only lose the time.
Burn Elder Spirit Logs needs Elder Spirit Logs, which only come from the Elder Spirit Tree during the Hidden Forest event. See Woodcutting.
What burning gives you
Every burn uses up one log and gives Firemaking XP. It can also drop
Ash,
Coal Ore and a
Firemaking Chest. Each log in the game lists these under Also drops. Longer burns give more Ash, and higher logs give more Coal Ore.
| Log | Ash per burn | Coal Ore per burn | Firemaking Chest per burn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Logs | 10% chance of 1 | 10% chance of 1 | 0.1% |
| Oak Logs | 15.1% chance of 1 | 31.1% chance of 1 | 0.1% |
| Willow Logs | 20.4% chance of 2 | 52.2% chance of 1 | 0.2% |
| Teak Logs | 25.6% chance of 2 | 73.3% chance of 1 | 0.3% |
| Maple Logs | 30.8% chance of 3 | 94.4% chance of 1 | 0.3% |
| Mahogany Logs | 38.5% chance of 3 | 1, plus a 15.6% chance of 1 more | 0.4% |
| Elder Spirit Logs | 41.1% chance of 4 | 2 | 0.4% |
| Yew Logs | 46.2% chance of 4 | 1, plus a 36.7% chance of 1 more | 0.4% |
| Magic Logs | 61.4% chance of 6 | 1, plus a 57.8% chance of 1 more | 0.6% |
| Redwood Logs | 76.6% chance of 7 | 1, plus a 78.9% chance of 1 more | 0.8% |
| Elderwood Logs | 76.8% chance of 7 | 2 | 0.8% |
Every log works out to about one Firemaking Chest per 33 minutes of burning. Drops come offline too.
- Ash is used to craft Urns in
Crafting, and Urns are offered for
Prayer XP. - Coal Ore is the same coal you mine, used to smelt bars in
Smithing. - Firemaking Chest opens for a random reward. Its contents are on the
Firemaking Chest page.
The Great Bonfire (Firemaking 99)
The Bonfire is a late unlock, so you will not see fuel anywhere in the game until you light it. It is lit by quest 4 of the Emberwardens' Guild Trials, and that quest chain opens at Firemaking 99. Reaching 99 alone does not light it.
Once it is lit, a Bonfire card appears on the Firemaking screen, and every log you burn also adds fuel to the fire. While the fire has fuel, you get +10% XP in every non-combat skill, Firemaking included. You do not choose a skill: it boosts whichever skill you are training at the time. Combat does not get the bonus.
- Fuel is spent by time, not by actions. One second of any skilling action uses one second of fuel, whether you are cutting logs, smelting bars or exploring.
- Fuel never runs down on its own. It is only spent while you train a skill, online or offline. Being idle or away spends nothing, and there is no limit to how much you can store.
- Better logs give more fuel. Each burn adds the log's XP divided by 15, rounded:
| Log | Firemaking level | Fuel per burn | Fuel per second of burning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Logs | 1 | 2 | 1.0 |
| Oak Logs | 5 | 4 | 1.3 |
| Willow Logs | 20 | 6 | 1.5 |
| Teak Logs | 30 | 8 | 1.6 |
| Maple Logs | 40 | 9 | 1.5 |
| Mahogany Logs | 50 | 12 | 1.6 |
| Elder Spirit Logs | 55 | 12 | 1.5 |
| Yew Logs | 60 | 15 | 1.7 |
| Magic Logs | 70 | 20 | 1.7 |
| Redwood Logs | 80 | 26 | 1.7 |
| Elderwood Logs | 90 | 33 | 2.2 |
Two guild items add more fuel per burn. Their bonuses add together:
| Item | Slot | Fuel bonus |
|---|---|---|
Emberward Apron | Body | +25% |
Firemaking Skill Cape | Cape | +100% |
Wearing both gives ×2.25 fuel per burn.
Recommended gear
One item per slot — a skill loadout holds exactly one of each, and only one item is tagged for firemaking in any slot, so this is the complete set.

Cape | Firemaking Skill Cape | Double Bonfire fuel per burn | Firemaking 99 | Quest reward — Emberwardens' Guild Trials |
