Every attempt succeeds 80% of the time, at any level; the other 20% take the time and pay no XP. XP/s here already counts that: XP × 80% ÷ time, before gear, upgrades, events and speed bonuses. Gear with a success bonus closes the gap, and a +20% bonus makes every attempt succeed.

A failed attempt still uses its logs, feathers and bars. With Keith's Steady Hands (total level 750, 2,000 gems) you keep them and only lose the time.
